Attempts
One of the first projects handled by Abhikram with an objective to create a small play/ nursery classroom area that had to be built in a reserved area of the school compound and hence no above ground construction activity would be permitted within the legal framework.
Processes
A pit seemed to be the best option, dug out of the ground with many levels of fluid colourful varied size platforms and a temporary roof structure, of geodesic dome made from metal tubes and covered with a plastic sheet, sandwiched between two layers of bamboo matting. This met with all the official requirements of tables, benches and blackboard with Swings, ladders, hammocks, mobile etc. suspended from the roof (framing) making sure that the children learnt through fun and play.
The Work
The unique feature of the space is there are no designated entries, so that children enter from all sides, and can also use the two slides provided in the design. The light/ventilation factor was handled from space between the ground and the dome, which served as windows and entrances into the space.
The Lessons
There are many ways of achieving the same goal, like entering a classroom using steps, or a slide or hopping down the levels. The idea to look at everything in totality must be developed, and learning is not to be limited in four walls of the classroom.
Outcome
A class room which imparts education through active play and is not restricted to its four walls. The vibrancy and the joy experienced by children in the use of this play – classroom has resulted in many schools being desirous to add it in their own premises. This is to be scaled up by Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), Gujarat State who is planning to add this play – classroom at least in one school in every district.
