Markku Lang is a Finnish researcher, designer, and former teacher educator specializing in the research and development of learning spaces with the Finnish National Agency for Education. As the founder of Oppimaisema Oy, he has led numerous school design projects across Finland and Europe, exploring how deep learning, wellbeing, and spatial form can be meaningfully connected. His doctoral research at the University of Lapland examines how flows and rhythms shape the school day, with a particular focus on shared learning spaces. With a background in teacher education at the Oulu University Teacher Training School, Markku studies teachers’ spatial competencies and the interplay between intended and actual use of learning environments. He has also developed the Competence-Driven Co-Design (CODE)concept, which frames user participation as a pedagogical and future-oriented learning process. At PULSE 2025, he will present Finnish research on school typologies and spatial adequacy, showing how adaptive learning environments can foster inclusion, well-being, and deep learning.
