You are shaped by the people around you.
Photo: Maple Bear Canadian School, Olomouc · SOA Architekti · Studio FlusserHumans don’t grow vertically or horizontally.
They grow orbitally.
A ladder grows you alone, one step at a time. A sprawl gives you more contacts and less depth. An orbit is different: the same path, the same people, the same centre — closer every pass.
That is how learning spaces get better in India. Not one school reading a report, but many schools, architects and researchers circling one question together.
Points on the orbit, in order, every year: Opening Bell · Spatial Audit · the Tour · Campfire · Awards · PULSE · Impact Report · Benchmark · the next orbit.
Where are you?
Every school is on one of three journeys. The orbit starts you there.
Building new
Land, a deadline, a first campus or a second branch. The costliest decisions happen before the first drawing.
Start with a Brief ReviewTransforming
A campus that works but no longer fits. You don’t need a new building. You need to see the one you have.
Start with the Spatial AuditAligning
The pedagogy moved — NEP, IB, inquiry — and the rooms didn’t. A new curriculum in a building made for an old one.
Start with Foundation for your facultySix ways to get better
Each one serves a person in your school. All six answer the same question each year.
See better
Expeditions to Scandinavia, Japan & Singapore, Australia & New Zealand and across India, plus a virtual library.
Know better
The Spatial Audit, the Cost Benchmark and the State of Learning Spaces in India. Your school against the nation.
Build better
For promoters and project heads. A Brief Review before you sign, member procurement, peer design review.
Run better
For estate managers, COOs and bursars. A certification, a clinic, a benchmark and a buying pool.
Teach better
For teachers. Foundation, Practitioner, Space Leader — a credential your school can show parents.
Learn better
Students 10–18 redesign a real space, build it over summer, and present it on the PULSE stage.
Most of a building’s cost is decided in the brief. Not on site.
Before — Brief Review and Spatial Audit. During — member pricing, phased to summer breaks. After — post-occupancy at 6 and 18 months.
You build once. You pay to run it every year.
A quarterly Opex Clinic, the Estate Benchmark every January, and a services pool at member pricing.
Save capex before you pour concrete
Most of a school’s building cost is decided in the brief, not on site. Most of its running cost is decided by how many rooms sit empty. The orbit puts both decisions in front of people who have made them before.
Where the biggest savings live
- Brief Review. A GLSN panel reads your brief and concept before you sign; one review a year is included for every Campus.
- Right-size. The Spatial Audit shows what your programme actually needs; multi-use replaces single-use before it is drawn.
- See before you design. A tour, or the virtual library, so you don’t pay to rediscover what already works.
- Passive first. Orientation, shading, daylight and cross-ventilation designed in, so the energy bill is smaller for the life of the building.
Spend with the network, not alone
- Member procurement. Studio partners extend member pricing on furniture, lighting, acoustics and AV; the network buys as one.
- Phase to the calendar. Build in summer breaks, open in phases, keep the school running and the loan smaller.
- Peer design review. Your drawings at a Campfire, in front of heads who have lived with the mistakes you are about to make.
- No rework. Teachers trained in Spatial Intelligence brief the architect properly the first time.
Know what the building costs to run
- Post-occupancy evaluation at six and eighteen months: which rooms work, which sit empty, what to change cheaply.
- Opex tracking. Energy, maintenance, cleaning and utilisation per space, so the next decision has a number behind it.
- Member Cost Benchmark. Anonymised capex per square foot and opex per student across member campuses — the dataset India doesn’t have.
- Hand over to Run Better. Your estate team enters Estate Intelligence, and the numbers keep coming.
Five moves you can make this quarter
A school pays for its building once. It pays to run it every year
Nobody trains the people who carry that cost. Run Better does: a certification, a clinic, a benchmark and a buying pool, built for the operations side of the school.
Estate Intelligence
The certificationThe operations twin of Spatial Intelligence: three stackable levels, the same credential logic, timed to the school calendar.
Five moves for the estate team
Five adults shape one learner’s day. They never meet.
The light in her classroom was an estate decision. The way the desks face was a teacher’s. The corridor was an architect’s. The budget was a promoter’s. Whether any of it helped is a researcher’s question. The orbit puts them in one room — and the learner is the reason.
One year. One orbit
Timed to the Indian school calendar — not the other way round.
Every fortnight, Express and the podcast. Every month, a Campfire at a member campus. Every quarter, members only: both benchmarks, Express Inside, Fellows sessions, the Opex Clinic.
