The Mine School in Quito, Ecuador, a special place, founded by four visionary women,
is focused on learning, inclusion, creativity, connection to nature, and affordable.
The Common Ground Collaborative (CGC) has partnered with Mine School since the
outset. Our mission of ‘Becoming Human’ emerged here. Mine believes that learning is
human and it becomes possible for all when a person has a sense of belonging.
Mine has no ‘concrete’ buildings. The ‘third teacher’, the learning environment,
comprises geodesic domes & 6 safari tents in a eucalyptus grove. Learners create
evidence of learning which they share in different ways. Parents are deeply involved.
Each family is a ‘Learning Family’.
Each year the Mine Community comes together for a Learning Exhibition, each dome
housing a culminating celebration of a Mine/CGC Learning Module. Learners share
evidence of their learning, in multiple ways.
The Human Learning Festival, an opportunity to join, for a few special days, this living
Learning Ecosystem, where Culture, Curriculum, and Community in the special Context of a woodland campus.
