SCHOOL AYAKKAD – An ecosystem that honours its traditions with learning atmospheres Located towards the rural context of Palakkad, allowing an escape from the hustle and chaos of the cities. An ecosystem which is surrounded by the paddy fields and the lush green envelope. School is grounded in a way that; it follows the native architecture there that existed with the rhythm of tradition.

Previously the existing structures were of poor quality and scattered within the site without a proper master planning. These structures were placed at different portions in different orientations, which were constructed during various time periods. The scope is mainly intended on crafting the overall master plan for these and uplifting of the school. It is achieved by using different strategies such as preservation, Rehabilitation, Adaptive reuse, New construction and Renovation. This is done in two phases, where the first phase includes the construction of a new admin block which is inspired from the existing problems itself.
Planned on a 2.53-acre site, this new Admin block (20659 sq.ft) consists of different functions under one roof. It is conceived as a linear form, in a way that this form defines a clear axis to the school by emphasising the entry, additionally allowing the segregation between the public and private zones within the school. This administration block includes different meeting rooms, classrooms, and an auditorium which is flexible for different uses.
Planning is done in a way that a proper segregation is maintained between the open, semi open and closed spaces. Ground floor space is open, allowing them to connect flawlessly with the surroundings which act as a gateway to the rest. On the second floor, the spaces are semi open, with verandas running parallel and visually connecting with the open ground floor below and the adjacent blocks surrounding. The closed second floor is composed of an auditorium which is flexible for various activities. The design strategies used were verandas, open seating spaces, north facing linear windows, interactive double height spaces, gathering pockets, arcades and rooms with lights on both sides. Gradation is achieved by the double height spaces inside, which visually connects the indoor and outdoor seamlessly. This welcomes the filtered natural light inside making the spaces elegant and energy filled pockets that inspires the young minds. Soft light, mild colours, and natural materials creates a cohesive and energy filled space. The architecture artfully combines the raw textural quality of concrete with the organic earthy hues. While floor to floor balconies enhance transparency and facilitate an indoor-outdoor transition, integrating the building with the surrounding context.

A multifunctional common space is created at the centre by this playful trial of steps, which becomes the core breathable space inside. This connects different levels inside, and improves interaction between the young minds by visually and verbally connecting them. Another multifunctional space is created near the staircase, which allows one to connect, to have friends and also can function as a performance space.

The new design takes its inspiration from the traditional principles used in the existing structures. Repetition is adapted to this new structure with innovation. The repetition of the brick walls at the north facade helped in achieving the privacy aspects without compromising the aesthetic and traditional character of the structure. The vertical brickwork inside, and the long vertical columns inside, is adding a visual rhythm to the space.

Always envisioned as a school, where its essence balances between the heritage and innovation which is culturally rooted and emphasising on the open spaces. A space where children feel safe, a place to unwind that encourages the interaction between students themselves and with the teachers and fosters collaboration.
